Autumn Joys
A few snap-shots from the past few days that helped inspire this poem
The plush hush-hush of feet through leaves...
The plush hush-hush of feet through leavesThe stillness of fields shucked of sheavesThe way the wind through woodland weavesA canopy of blueThe hurry-scurry, frisky squirrelThe leaf-cartwheel, the boy and girlImitating the lilt and twirlOf treetop’s dwindling hue
Rain-rendered decoupage, wet-coldLanes and sidewalks paved with leaf-goldA little mittened hand to holdOr steaming cup ‘o joeGladness so profound the heart leapsWith praise for squash and pumpkin heapsAnd all goodness man plants then reapsAs by God’s grace we go
The five-star bliss of five-star dreamsFor five-star supper’s five-star beamsOf five-star happiness that gleamsIn loved one’s smiles and eyesWarmth of homecooked simplicityAnd precious love of familyKindles a thankful-as-can-beMasterpiece-paradise
The undulating rise and fallAs landscapes pen a madrigalThat needs no words to say it allYet leaves spectators awedBy nature’s color-symphonySpilling across the dimming leaAn autumn song we throng to seeWhose composer is God
