A Give-Me Benediction

And just like that February is over!!! Don't you love the sound of a kettle whistlingthe prelude to a cup-sized vacay?!! Give me a kettle that whistles the lyricsPreceding a cup-sized vacayGive me a nook with a book and a windowTo nurture a noon-getawayGive me a morning, gold-polished with sunshineAnd gladness for mercy renewedGive me enough lack to keep me from nursingA heart of ingratitudeGive me a child, innocent and eager,Brimming with curiosityGive me an ear that is always half-hearingSnatches of untamed poetryGive me the eye of Beholden BeholderWhere earth and sky glory aboundsGive me a cup, though its handle is brokenThat joy over joy still confoundsGive me a will, not my own but contentedNo matter what today bringsTo trust the Giver whose Hand has oft mendedAnd tuned my oft off-key harp/heart-stringsGive me the goodness of grief-tutored chatterRich with mutual sympathyPleasureful cadence of voices and laughterTo frame in fond memory…Give me love’s splendid delight, fierce yet tenderAs season-tides rise and fallRemind me when love cheers the charge of the dutyNo task is too common or smallGive me the beauty of daylight departingIn backdrops of deep indigoGive me a soul not afraid of the smartingWaiting beyond every helloGive me the kind of trust that kindles courageCome whatsoever yet mayGive me a kettle that whistles the welcomeTo a cup-sized holiday © Janet Martin Give me the eye of Beholden BeholderWhere earth and sky glory abounds...
